Stocks hardly changed as early gain fades; banks rise

New York • U.S. stocks little changed Thursday after giving up an early gain. Energy companies are rising with the price of oil and retailers are up after a series of strong sales reports. Banks are also climbing as bond yields rise. However phone companies, utilities, and other high-dividend stocks are slipping and technology companies are also lower.
