U.S. jobless claims fall by 2,000 to 236,000

Washington • Fewer Americans sought jobless benefits last week, and the number of people collecting unemployment checks felt to the lowest level since 1988 — more evidence the U.S. job market remains strong. THE NUMBERS: The Labor Department said Thursday that initial claims for jobless aid fell by 2,000 to 236,000. The less volatile four-week average blipped up by 500 to 243,500.
