U.S. stocks open higher ahead of Fed decision

New York • Stocks are opening slightly higher ahead of a key decision by the Federal Reserve on the economy. The Dow Jones industrial average is up five points to 13,338 at the open. The Standard & Poor’s 500 is up less than a point at 1,437. The Nasdaq composite is up three at 3,117. The Federal Reserve will issue a statement just after 10 a.m., and Chairman Ben Bernanke speaks at 12:15 p.m.. The Fed may buy U.S. bonds or take other steps to stimulate the economy.
